Start Here

Welcome. There are nineteen years of writing on this site, which is either a gift or an obstacle depending on where you begin. So begin here.

A Vision Splendid asks one question, and has asked it since 2001: why do we have every labour-saving device ever invented, and no time at all?

I don't answer it with a system. I answer it by going back to the women who ran a household, a farm and three side businesses without electricity — and testing what they knew against a modern life of school runs, deadlines and a law practice. Some of it holds up remarkably well. Some of it does not. I write down both.

If you read nothing else, read these five.

The Paradox of Our Age

Bigger houses, smaller families. More conveniences, less time. The whole argument of this site, said better than I can say it.

My Grandmother's Money Tin

How a woman with no job and no bank account stayed ahead of her money. Still the most practical thing she taught me.

Ten Things My Grandmother NEVER Did

Where I have landed after twenty-five years of testing. The clearest statement of what I believe now.

Herbs and Spice and All Things Nice

Old wisdom at the scale of a kitchen windowsill. Small, cheap, and it changes how you cook.

The Best Patty Cake Recipe

My sister-in-law's recipe, and the single most-read thing I have ever published. Nineteen years of philosophy, and what you actually want is the cake. I understand completely.

When you are ready for the rhythm of the year, come to the Book of Days. And if you would like the next letter to find you rather than the other way around, join the newsletter.

Live simply, live joyfully. Follow the old paths — they are tried and true.
