Book of Days

The old year had a shape. You knew what month it was by what was on the stove, what was in the ground and what needed mending. We have lost that shape, and I think we feel its absence more than we realise.

The Book of Days is my attempt to give the year its rhythm back.

Each month carries one word, and that word runs through four parts of life:

  • Mind — what we give our attention to
  • Home — the rooms we actually live in
  • Finances — money, handled calmly
  • Energy — what we spend, and what replenishes it

It is not a challenge and there is nothing to complete. It is a way of paying attention to one thing at a time for thirty days, which turns out to be more than most of us manage.

The calendar is Australian. When the northern hemisphere is banking its fires, we are opening the windows.

August: Repair

Mend. Maintain. Move forward.

After releasing, restoring, rebalancing, reflecting and resting, August rolls up its sleeves.

Repair is a hopeful word. It assumes the thing is worth keeping. We are not throwing everything out and starting again from nothing — we are taking what matters, tending the worn places, fixing what has been neglected, and making it strong again.

Here in the Southern Hemisphere the days are lengthening. There is more light, and the first hints of spring. August is the month to pick things up, dust them off, and begin again with more care than before.

The year

  • January — Reset. Begin the year deliberately, not frantically.
  • February — Return. Back to school, back to rhythm, back to the routines that hold.
  • March — Release. Let go of what the year has already proved you don't need.
  • April — Restore. Repair the reserves that summer spent.
  • May — Rebalance. Recalibrate as the year turns toward winter.
  • June — Reflect. The long night invites you inward.
  • July — Rest. Permission to pause. It is not falling behind.
  • August — Repair. Mend. Maintain. Move forward.
  • September — Refresh. Spring. Open the windows, clear the corners.
  • October — Renew. Plant. Begin the things that need a long run.
  • November — Reconnect. The gathering season. People before preparations.
  • December — Rejoice. Celebrate without exhausting yourself doing it.
